When You Hit Rock-Bottom
Trials. We all go through them. Whether your spouse just cheated on you, you lost a loved one, your friends back-stabbed you, you feel lonely, your health is beating you, or whatever it may be, we all go through things that weigh on us and make us feel like we can't go on.
It is commonly believed and stated that God will not "give us more than we can handle" or that He will not put us through "more than we can take." However, that concept is actually not Biblical. The idea is a misunderstanding of 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." Here, Paul is writing about TEMPTATIONS. These are temptations to sin, etc. Often, it has been interpreted that God will not TEST us or bring us through TRIALS that are more than we can bear. It is true that we will not be tempted to sin beyond what we can resist. But the idea that we we will not go through trials that are more than we can take is actually not Biblical.
In fact, it is very Biblical that God will allow us to be tested -- to go through very difficult times -- in order to teach us to rely on Him. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-7, Paul writes about how God is a God of comfort, there for us to lean on in times of affliction. Notice in verses 8-10, Paul was certainly tested beyond his strength: "For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened BEYOND OUR STRENGTH that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of DEATH. But that was to MAKE US RELY not on ourselves, but on GOD who raises the dead."
I am writing all of this out of concern. Because of the common misconception that God will not give us more than we can bear, many people leave the faith. They feel that they HAVE been given more than they can handle, and they begin to feel that God is a liar or that Christianity is a big hoax. Whatever you're going through, I'm sure, is not easy. I am not claiming to understand or to know how you are feeling. But I will say that I have, at times, felt like I couldn't handle some of the pain I've felt in my past. That's when I have learned to rely on the God of comfort.
The amazing thing about all of it is that it is these times of weakness -- the times when we feel like we will not survive if things get any worse -- that God's power is most capable of being seen. Our weakness gives God a stage to work in our lives. Paul experienced worse things than I've ever experienced. He had a thorn in the flesh that kept him down consistently, and he begged God three times to remove it. God's response is a resounding comfort to all who face trials of various kinds (see James 1 -- a great book to read when facing trials). God said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (2 Cor. 12:8-9.
There are times in our lives when we pray earnestly for things, and God's answer is "No." It is hard for us to understand why. I don't understand everything about why God says "no" to us. But I do know that I've seen Him say "no" to me in my past, I've seen Him say "no" to my husband in His past, and we are better people today for that. At the time that He says "no," it can feel like the world is coming to an end. The idea that there could be something better is unfathomable to us. But someday, we can look back at times that God said "no" and we can see more clearly what God was teaching us when He denied us the one thing we felt we so desperately needed. He may say "no" because He has something greater in store for us. He may say "no" to teach us patience. He may say "no" to teach us to rely on Him and not on ourselves. I don't know all of the reasons He says "no," but I do know that trials can be a little less painful if we can somehow learn how to trust Him when He does say "no." He has the full picture of our lives, while we can only see a tiny glimpse. And He knows how best to answer our prayers, even when we don't always see it ourselves.
Whoever you are, and whatever your trial, you are in my prayers as you struggle to trust God in these difficult times. Don't give up on Him. Don't run from Him. Instead, lean on Him and rely on Him. Rest in His arms.
**I thank my husband for enlightening me on many of these truths. I would not be capable of writing on this topic if it had not been for the love of my life. :)

When Dreams Come True
When I read this, I fall to my knees in thankfulness to God. There was a time in my life when I wondered if this statement was true. I didn't have the family that I wanted. My life at home wasn't the "Christian" life that I so desperately desired. I hated my life in a lot of ways, and I loved God so much. And I couldn't understand why God hadn't placed me into a situation where my family lived the same life that I sought-one that led to heaven. I couldn't understand what I had done to "deserve" the punishment I felt like I was dealt. But I held on. I held on when I read this passage. I prayed. I trusted God with every ounce of trust I could muster.
It paid off. My dreams came true! The life that I am living right now is the life that I dreamed of as a young girl. I love everything about it. I love my husband. I love that he is a man of God. I love working so closely with the church. I love attending Heritage Christian University where I can learn more and more about God. I love the future that I dream of. I love the children that I dream of. I love the family that we have and the family I can imagine in the future. I love everything about it, and I have no one to thank for it but God. God has blessed me with this life that I live. I haven't earned it. But I am so thankful for it.
All those years ago, when I was so afraid that things would never change, God's promise held true. He did (does) have a future for me. His plans for me were (are) to give me a future and a hope. And He has blessed me in ways that I can never thank Him enough for.
I fall down in worship is I reminisce, awestruck, about the impact He has had and is having on my life each day that I live and each breath that I take.
Dear God,
Thank you. You have blessed me so richly. You have given me such a wonderful life. Your hand in my life has been so clear, so obvious, and so amazing. I am awestruck by your presence. Please help me to never take this for granted. Please stir in me, daily, a desire to live my life in a way that glorifies and thanks You for all that You have done. And please, God, if we are ever blessed with children, start molding me now. Do what it takes to turn me into the type of woman you would have a mother to be. And if we are blessed with children someday, give us wisdom to show them Your way. Give us wisdom to teach them Your way in a way that sticks, so that they will grow in the faith and be Yours forever. Thank you for giving me a future with a hope already. And I pray that the future with a hope that you've promised will continue to unfold in my life. And I pray that I will continue to recognize Your hand in it and give you every bit of the glory for it.
Amen.

People Are Like Incense.

People are like incense. You burn it, and it gives off some kind of an aroma.
I have seen and smelled a lot of different kinds of incense. Some of it smells fantastic. On the other hand, some of it smells like . . . well, a lot of things that are a little too crude to write in a blog post.
Like incense, sometimes we are brought to the fire. And when we are, we will undoubtedly produce an aroma.
The million dollar question is this: when YOU are brought through the fire, what is your aroma?
James 1:2-4 says:
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
There is no question about it "WHEN you meet trials." Not "If." Sometimes things happen in our lives and we don't know how to deal with it. Sometimes God lets us come through the fire because He sees something beautiful beneath all of the slag and impurities, similar to the process of purifying gold. He knows that after we come out of the fire, the ugly parts will have melted away.
But what about while we are in the fire? Like with incense, when we are in the fire we will give off an aroma. Will it be a pleasing aroma? Or will it be on that disgusts others and sends them away holding their nose?
2 Corinthians 2:14-16 says:
"But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life."
We need remember that we are like incense. When we are in the fire, we have a strong aroma. And we need to decide what kind of aroma we want to saturate our surroundings with.
As Christians, we have a responsibility to be mindful of our aroma. When others are around us, our "Christness" should be so strong that we blow people away by it. It should be so strong that after we walk past someone, the scent lingers.
So just remember. People are like incense.

The Most Popular Lie
MYTH:
"God will not give me more than I can bear."
Yes. You are reading correctly. I said it is a lie. And that's Scriptural.
The verse actually says :"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
A temptation and a burden/trial are two different things. James 1 makes a distinction between the two. Temptations are opportunities for sin. Trials, on the other hands, are completely out of our control. Things like death, illness, natural catastrophe, etc. And frankly, God WILL allow you to fall into trials. Why? "that the testing of your faith might produce perseverance." (James 1:3)
This brings us to an age-old question: Why would I believe in or love a God who would allow me so much pain? He is trying to mold you! He is trying to produce steadfastness in you . . . to bring you to full maturity!
God WILL give us more than we can bear sometimes, because it forces us to rely on Him. It forces us to let go and realize WE CAN'T DO THIS ALONE!
So don't believe the lie. If you do, it has great potential to destroy your faith the next time God tests it. And He will. Not because He is a big, mean guy upstairs. He is using tests to make you look more like Christ.
It's a good thing. Glorify Him.
(The thoughts of this blog come from a chapel message my husband, Matt, gave at Heritage Christian University)
